My gal pal who is
blogging about saving money has inpsired me to try some cost-saving techniques myself. I'm not by any means in dire financial straits, but I think carving a little here and a little there out of my spending habits will help pad my savings account nicely. And it will help my credit card bill behave.
So, here's what I've done so far:
1. I've unsubscribed from the e-mail services from my favorite stores: Victoria Secret, Nine West, Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, Anthropolgie and Urban Outfitters. I frequently found myself buying stuff I didn't need simply because I had a coupon or it was on sale. No need to remind myself of my shopping habit every single day.
2. I've stopped making drop-ins at Target. Some people go for a walk in a park. Others drink a beer on their porch. When I need sanity, I go to Target. It's a very familiar, comforting place for me, and I feel calmer when I'm inside. But the problem is that I didn't just browse when I was there. I'd load up on stuff I absolutely don't need. $25 here and $48 there adds up pretty quickly.
3. I've been clipping coupons for the grocery store. Now, granted, none of those coupons actually have MADE it to the grocery store with me, but I'm half-way there in my effort. We'll see how much it helps with our ridiculous fruit-and-vegetable-consumption schedule.
4. And finally, I've tried to cook more. It's such a simple change, but it makes all the difference in my caloric intake and my wallet. I cooked three nights last week, which is a record for me. A couple of the other nights, we just had canned soup or leftovers at home. And I had yummy homemade lunches most of the week. My goal is to do actual meal planning each week so that our trips to the grocery store aren't just grabbing random things. (The jury's still out on whether this will continue successfully.)
